I bought a RonRig, or similar style Rig, what Next?

If you have never used this style fishing Rig, I would suggest:

  • At least a 7" Fishing Rod with Heavy to Heavy Heavy action.
    • You can buy specialized rods, but a swim-bait rod will work too.
    • The weight of 5 jigs will require you to use both hands to cast, easier on the wrists!
    • Ronrig's don't have weight in the head, thus less weight to cast and pull back.
      • For instance, the weight of 5-1/8 lb jig heads, and the plastics, you are casting and retrieving about 1 lb, which is quite a bit of weight ,
    • If you are using a 1/2 oz same style rg that just adds to the weight of an already heavy rig.
  • What kind of  line is used?
    • Braided Line - at least 65 lb
      • Using too light of line can cause the Rig to break even on a cast.
      •  In the event your RonRig gets hung up, you have a better chance of retrieving, without breaking the line.
    • In very clear water, 25lb Mono or Fluorocarbon can be used, be aware that these lines break easier than 65 lb braid.
  • Use a good reel with 5.5:1 - 6.1:1  ratio seem to be most popular, to some fish 7.2:1 ratio.
    • Fish are usualy suspended or under a lot of cover.
      • Cast the RonRig to suspended fish (use your graph)
      • If casting in cover and you get hung up, don't yank the bait, instead move towards the bait and  once on the opposite side jig your line, gently up and down,  and sometimes the weight of the rig will loosen.
      • Use a RonRig retreiver
        • Unclip the top snap, and wrap the coil around your standing fishing line, clip the line.
        • make sure you have heavy braid or braided nylon connected to the top of the RonRig Retriever.
        • Let the Retreiver slide down your line, once it stops, jig it until you feel the hook grab the RonRig (or any other tackle).
        • You will feel it hook on then pull to try and get your RonRig released.
    • 2-3 quick turns to straighten the rig out and flash the Bait behind the rig.
    • Slow steady Retrieve
    • DO NOT set the hook, because usually the fish are attacking, first pass the kill, and they come back if not hooked for the injured bait.
    • Also, slow Retrieval when the fish is hooked, sometimes other fish attack the other baits.
  • Willow or Colorado Blades, which do i use???
    • Willow blades offer a faster retrieve, and are generally fished in warmer water.  They give the appearance of your bait chasing smaller bait.
    • Colorado blades offer a slower retrieve, and is generally fished in cooler water.  They give the appearance of bait that have settled for the winter, moving slower, and look fuller.
    • That being said, your general preference and fishing conditions also affect which to use.  If one is not working, try another one.
